During examination of the skeletal roentgenograms of ninety-eight children taken at the age of 1 month I have observed phenomena in the lateral pictures of the tarsal bones. I am unable to find a description and discussion of some of these phenomena in the literature. A description of these variations in appearance is presented here because I believe that the presence or absence of certain of them may depend on the effects of the birth process or the infant's adjustment to its neonatal environment.

Since the phenomena observed consist of bands or rings in the nuclei of the tarsal bones, it seems desirable to present first such descriptions of bands and rings as are to be found in the literature, together with a discussion of their etiology.
