This book of 346 pages has been prepared by a pediatrician in order to help the mother understand the needs and care of the new-born and of the older infant. Beginning with some advice to the mother on antepartum precautions, the author skilfully presents the attributes of the average baby, gives pertinent advice on the selection of a nurse and describes in detail care in the nursery and routine in the home. He outlines the general types of feeding; discusses first aid, general measures for the sick infant and practical medical procedures, such as enemas and inhalations, and offers advice on habits and training.
One of the most helpful features of the book is a chapter on recipes for the child in early years. The name of the book is slightly misleading because it applies equally well to babies in temperate climates.
