The purpose of this paper is to present an unusual example of cardiac arrhythmia in a new-born infant and to discuss briefly the therapy administered in cases of this disorder.
Paroxysmal tachycardia in children is rare, as is evident from the paucity of reports in the literature. A complete review of the literature of forty-three years (1892 to 1935) reveals a total of fifty-two cases of paroxysmal tachycardia in children between the ages of 4 days and 15 years (table). A review of these fifty-two cases brings into relief the following observations:
- There is no significant predilection as to age.
- Boys and girls are about equally represented.
- The predisposing factors are extremely variable. The incidence of congenital heart disease is high. Of the infectious diseases, measles and pertussis are in the lead as causative agents.
