In a previous paper¹ entitled "Changes in the Basal Metabolism of Children During a Year," I reported that for girls the rate of increase was higher at the ages of 11 and 12 years than at the earlier ages. It follows that special consideration is necessary for the basal metabolism at puberty, which constitutes an important part of studies on growth and basal metabolism.

Before proceeding with my report, I shall make a brief survey of the literature on basal metabolism and puberty to indicate the general tendency of the studies. Du Bois,² in 1916, and Olmstead, Barr and Du Bois,³ in 1918, were the first to direct special attention to the variation of the basal metabolism at puberty.
