A REPORT OF THIRTY-SEVEN CASES OCCURRING IN PHILADELPHIA

This is a report of a series of thirty-seven cases of epidemic lymphocytic meningo-encephalitis occurring in Philadelphia in the summer of 1935. The children were admitted to the children's department of the Philadelphia General Hospital, in the service of Dr. William N. Bradley, between the dates of July 27 and September 15. During the same period a total of one hundred and nineteen patients were admitted to the wards with all types of complaints, so that this series comprised approximately one third of the total patients admitted. In addition, twenty-six patients were admitted to the adult medical service with apparently the same condition.

In general, these patients presented the picture of abortive poliomyelitis, and during the same time there were undoubtedly cases of poliomyelitis in and about Philadelphia.
