In a previous publication¹ the use of scraped raw apple in the treatment for diarrhea of infants was presented. In that work several objections to the scraped raw apple treatment were observed. First, a good grade of ripe apples was scarce in the diarrhea season; second, the expense was relatively high, and third, the nursing care involved was excessive when several infants were being fed the apple diet. With these objections in mind, a substitute was devised that retained all of the good points of apple and overcame some of the objections.

From the work of Malyoth² and others,³ it seems that pectin and cellulose are the two active principles in apple so far as therapy of diarrhea is concerned. With this thought in mind, a substitute was formulated using these two ingredients as therapeutic agents, and a dextrinmaltose preparation was added as a source of calories. . . .
