In 1918 Zondek1 described the heart in four cases of hypothyroidism and introduced the term "myxedema heart." In a second article2 he reported two additional cases. In 1925 Fahr3 called attention to the entity in this country. He stated that the onset of myxedema heart occurs between 19 and 70 years of age, an observation not confirmed by our report. Zondek characterized the myxedema heart as follows:
- Before treatment with thyroid:
- Dilatation of the left and right sides of the heart, which may be of very high degree
- Slow, indolent heart action with normal blood pressure
- Lowering of the auricular wave and of the T wave of the electrocardiogram
- After treatment with thyroid:
- Return of the heart from marked dilatation to nearly normal size
- More lively heart action and more rapid pulse without change in blood pressure
