Abscess of the liver in infants is rare and is usually not taken into consideration in the differential diagnosis of obscure lesions in the upper half of the abdominal cavity. In this article 2 cases of abscess of the liver in infants who came to autopsy will be reported, and a discussion of the pathogenesis in relation to umbilical infection will be given.¹

REPORT OF CASES

CASE 1.—A white boy 6 weeks of age was brought to the hospital by the mother because of swelling and tenderness of the abdomen and because of regurgitation of food, both of two weeks' duration. The infant was perfectly well until two weeks before admission, when the mother first noticed a small mass in the right upper abdominal quadrant.
