The incidence of primary tuberculosis of the skin relative to that of other forms of primary tuberculosis has been estimated from postmortem studies. Of 2,114 cases of tuberculosis reported by various investigators in which the site of the primary involvement was determined, Ghon and Kudlich¹ found three (0.14 per cent) to be instances of primary tuberculosis of the skin.

Relatively few cases of undoubted primary tuberculosis of the skin have been reported, exclusive of tuberculosis following circumcision and primary tuberculosis of the skin produced by BCG. Krantz² in 1931 collected reports of thirty-four cases of primary tuberculosis of the skin from the literature. Histologic or bacteriologic proof of tuberculosis of the skin was reported in fifteen of the cases and postmortem evidence in four, while in the remaining fifteen only clinical data were mentioned.
