Karl Friederich Otto Westphal was born in Berlin on March 23, 1833, the son of a prominent physician of the same name. He studied medicine in Berlin, Heidelberg and Zurich. In 1857 he was made an assistant in the smallpox division of the Charité Hospital in Berlin, and in the following year he became assistant physician in the department for the insane in the same institution, where he worked under such men as Griesinger, van Horn and Ideler. In 1861 he became a privat-docent in psychiatry in the University of Berlin, and in 1868 he was given charge of the smallpox division and of the department for internal diseases. In 1869 he was made professor ex officio in psychiatry and director and clinical teacher of the department for mental and nervous diseases, and in 1874, ordentliche professor of psychiatry.
