Three cases of meningitis in new-born infants caused by Bacillus acidi-lactici have been reported by Greenthal,¹ Sherman² and Pasachoff.³ None of these observers mentioned whether the infants had a positive blood culture. Ray⁴ reported the case of a man, aged 55, who had a retroperitoneal abscess, mediastinitis, pleurisy and pneumonia. A blood culture showed B. acidi-lactici, and a spinal fluid culture showed the same organism on two occasions.

Dickar⁵ reported two cases of endocarditis due to B. acidi-lactici. One patient, a man of 54, had a prostatic abscess, which was incised and drained. Later subacute bacterial endocarditis developed. At autopsy a pure culture of B. acidi-lactici was recovered from the blood of the heart, and evidences of metastases due to bacteremia were shown in the myocardium, pancreas, liver, kidneys, testes, brain and meninges.
