APPARENTLY CURED BY ROUTTE'S OPERATION (VENOUS PERITONEAL ANASTOMOSIS)

The case here reported is that of an infant who had a condition which is infrequently met with, namely, congenital chylous ascites. In the review by Wallis and Schollberg¹ of 171 reported cases of milky ascites, no congenital case is mentioned, and only 3 patients were under 1 year of age. In an analysis of 128 reported cases by Boston,2 there was only a single case reported as congenital, and 6 patients were under 1 year of age.

After searching in available literature at considerable length, I concluded that my patient must be by far the youngest ever subjected to the procedure of venous-peritoneal anastomosis, and since the procedure brought apparent clinical cure, I deem it worthy to be reported.

No attempt will be made to review the literature on the subject of congenital chylous ascites or to discuss the etiology.
