Jose Ribera (1588-1656), the Spanish painter, is well known to medical men on account of his portrait of a youth with a right-sided hemiplegia. There is also a left-sided facial paralysis and some speech disturbance, for he carries in his left hand a paper reading "Da mihi elimosinam propter amorem dei (For the love of God give me alms). Richer made the diagnosis of juvenile hemiplegia, but the picture is sometimes shown as a representation of poliomyelitis which, of course, it is not.
