A SYNDROME OCCURRING IN THE NEONATAL PERIOD MANIFESTING TETANY-LIKE SYMPTOMS

Some controversy exists as to the presence of tetany in the neonatal period. Grulee1 stated that "whether such a condition may be found during the first few weeks of life is doubtful." At the Dallas Southern Clinical Society, on April 1, 1931, he stated that he had never observed an instance of tetany during the first six weeks of life. Other excellent observers, notably von Reuss,2 believe that tetany does not occur during the new-born period. Pediatric textbooks fail entirely to mention this condition as being present at this interval of life. Kehrer3 described six instances of a syndrome that he believed to be tetany. Shannon4 has recently presented nine additional instances, described as tetany, occurring in infants less than 1 week of age.
