This book consists of a collection of papers which were read in a course for physicians and pedagogues at the University Children's Clinic of Berlin. It was inspired by Arthur Keller, whose activity as chief school physician of Berlin had awakened in him the desire for more intimate and fruitful relations between psychology and medicine.

Czerny's preface strikes the keynote. The master of pediatrics describes in short but pointed remarks the deplorable results that have arisen from the uncontrolled vegetation of theory in the field of child psychology. "The present situation is such that we must secure a serious cooperation between the pediatrician, psychologist and pedagogue, or the pediatrician will be forced to organize his own theory of child psychology and pedagogy.
