History.—Moe W., aged 2 2 years, was admitted to Beth Israel Hospital Feb. 3, 1930. The family history was unimportant. Two older children were well, although somewhat pale. The patient was born at full term after normal labor, and he was normal at birth. He was nursed for the first four and a half months and thereafter was bottle fed. He was always a poor eater, but nausea or vomiting never developed, although he was constipated. Two weeks before admission, there appeared on the left side of the neck a painful and tender swelling, which, however, slowly subsided. In the interval the temperature ranged from 101 to 103 F. Three days before admission he had generalized convulsions, and thereafter became more and more drowsy, until he could no longer be aroused from his stuporous state.
