"In the period of infancy and childhood lies the fountain head of tuberculosis" (preface). Not all cases of tuberculous disease in adult life originate during these early age periods, but the fact that tuberculosis in childhood had prepared the way and left its mark in more than 50 per cent of clinical cases in young adults is a striking observation. Fortunately, during infancy and childhood tuberculous infection quickly registers its presence, and at this time the study of the development and progress of the disease is most productive of practical results. The author's service as physician-in-chief of the first special hospital for tuberculous children in the United States has provided him with much of the valuable material which he has incorporated in this small but comprehensive monograph of 208 pages.
