SYMPTOMATOLOGY

The general symptoms of chronic interstitial nephritis in childhood will be discussed and, in addition, the special manifestations of bone changes which accompany a large number of cases.

In the literature, especially that contributed by the older writers, an attempt is made to differentiate between primary and secondary chronic interstitial nephritis. For example, it is brought out by Cockayne196 that a distinction should be recognized between cases in which there is a congenital defect of abnormally small kidneys with an added inflammation, either intra-uterine or extra-uterine in origin, and cases of chronic interstitial nephritis clinically resembling those of adult life. Just how this differentiation is to be made is not any too clear.
