The book is a worthy member of the series of monographs published by the Jahrbuch für Kinderheilkunde. Since no comprehensive review of both the clinical and the hematologic literature has ever been published, this volume is especially timely.

Filatow, in 1885, and E. Pfeiffer, in 1889, gave a clinical description of glandular fever but made no statement regarding observations on the blood. Their conception of the disease as a distinct entity was gradually abandoned and almost forgotten until Türk, in 1907, investigated the disease from a hematologic standpoint and pointed out its close similarity to acute lymphatic leukemia. Further progress in the knowledge was made almost entirely by hematologists until in recent years pediatricians and especially internists have shown the wide range of its clinical manifestations.
