Previous work on the protein metabolism of children, approached from the point of view of nitrogen balance, has been reported mostly by foreign writers. The experiments of Eric Muller1 and Arnas Ruotsalainen2 were carefully done from a technical standpoint but have been criticized by Holt and others, as have those of all workers in this field, on the ground that the subjects were undernourished or were children in institutions.
