This is a reprint of Eckstein's article in volume 36 of Ergebnisse der inneren Medizin und Kinderheilkunde. It is a demonstration of the shift of interest during the last two or three years from the epidemic to other forms of encephalitis. Only twenty-eight pages are devoted to the acute and chronic epidemic forms, while eighty-two are given to postvaccinal encephalitis. In his discussion of the epidemic disease, the author closely follows the lines laid down in Felix Stern's large monograph. He calls attention to the difficulty in recognizing the prodromal stage in infants, to the resemblance to tuberculous meningitis and to the occasional occurrence in children of an obstinate insomnia lasting for months following a brief and mild epidemic state.
