I do not pretend to cover the subject of beriberi in this paper, but I have written it chiefly to report several cases which appear to correspond to the usual picture of that disease in infants. The four cases considered have been seen in the space of the past six months, and it appears that similar cases have been previously noted by physicians in Charleston, but have never been recorded as cases of beriberi. Vedder,¹ an authority on the subject, stated that "no case of an infant affected by this disease has ever been reported" in the United States. The literature seems to contain no reference to local cases, and a recent article by Hoobler² reiterates that beriberi does not appear in infants in this country.
