Cases of hematoporphyrinuria following the ingestion of drugs, particularly sulphonal, are relatively common. There are, however, a small number of cases of so-called idiopathic hematoporphyrinuria reported chiefly in Germany and England. Two of the latter variety have recently been seen at this hospital. The findings agree so closely with descriptions by other authors that only a brief discussion will follow.

REPORTS OF CASES

CASE 1.—A colored boy, aged 3 years and 10 months, was admitted to the hospital Aug. 22, 1924, with the complaint of "abdominal pain." He died Jan. 22, 1925.

Family History.—The father, aged 28; the mother, aged 21, and one sister and one brother were all living and well.

Past History.—At the age of 22 months, two years before his present illness, the patient had been admitted to the Harriet Lane Home with an attack of acute diarrhea and bronchopneumonia. The urine at this time . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
