I. INTRODUCTION

The prenatal and postnatal changes in the mass and in the capacity of the stomach have been studied in some detail, and the qualitative changes in its musculature are well described. There is, however, almost no information on the quantitative changes in the gastric mucosa in the developmental period, although the applications of such data to gastric physiology in infancy and in childhood are obvious.

The present paper is a report of a quantitative study of one phase of this subject, namely, the growth in number of the gastric crypts and glands in later fetal life, infancy, childhood and adolescence. To this have been added data on the number of these structures in maturity, which were collected as a check on the findings for the developmental period.
