EXPERIMENTAL SCARLET FEVER

Attempts to learn the cause of scarlet fever have long been hampered by failure to obtain the disease experimentally. Until 1923, experimental scarlet fever had not been produced in animals or in man by inoculation of a pure culture of any organism. Symptoms that might represent scarlet fever in animals had been described; but they were inconstant, and had followed inoculations with a variety of materials and cultures. No organism had produced, in animals, a clinical condition that could be accepted as experimental scarlet fever.

In January, 1923, Hektoen¹ published an interesting historical review of the attempts to produce experimental scarlet fever in man. The successful inoculation of smallpox, as a preventive measure, had led to the hope of a similar success from the inoculation of scarlet fever. Thus, as Erasmus Darwin, the grandfather of Charles Darwin, wrote:
