A 7-YEAR-OLD GIRL had a history of "vaginal bleeding" for 3 days before presenting to the emergency department. She also complained of urinary frequency, dysuria, and vulvar pruritus. Medical history was unremarkable. Results of her physical examination were normal, except for a perineal mass as seen in Figure 1. There was no evidence of active bleeding. A 6-year-old girl with a similar history and findings is seen in Figure 2.
Denouement and Discussion
Urethral Prolapse
Urethral prolapse is an eversion of the urethral mucosa that protrudes through the external meatus. Mucosal prolapse is usually a complete circle, as seen in both patients, but partial prolapses of tissue may be seen.
