A Personal Perspective

I have added to the title of this presentation the modifier "A Personal Perspective" because my life and that of the family I'm about to describe have crisscrossed for more than 50 years, giving me a rare glimpse of the natural history of a chronic and debilitating disease. In addition, this family furnished the wherewithal for what was believed to be the first description of this disease by a contemporary of mine while he was chief resident in Pediatrics at Hopkins.

I first met the family in the hot summer of 1941, when, between the third and fourth years of medical school at Johns Hopkins, I worked in Pediatrics as a substitute intern. Everyone who could took vacations in the summer then because Baltimore's meteorological rigors were unmitigated by air conditioning, so students were welcomed as substitutes for vacationing house staff.
