We admire Dr Hick's talent for using words. However, as far as our article is concerned, Dr Hick has clearly missed the point. The aim of our study was not to assess treatment outcome, nor do we recommend polypharmacy in the treatment of otitis media. In fact, we share Dr Hick's concern for increasing antimicrobial resistance, but that is another story. The present study was undertaken to determine whether acute otitis media can be predicted by the symptoms of the children, which could serve as a basis for advising parents and thus even decrease the need to see a physician. Regrettably, we are not to blame for the results indicating that this is not the case.

Is Dr Hick basically trying to say that otitis media should be left undiagnosed? If so, we do not speak the same language. There is general agreement—at least in developed countries—that diagnosing . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
