An editorial note in a recent issue of the ARCHIVES said, "This commentary points out what sometimes seems to be the golden rule of managed care: manage a lot and care not. I hope someone out there is evaluating the effects of managed care so we can know if the problems described are generalized."

The Commentary¹ to which this was appended described the problems that young people with eating disorders had in getting and keeping health insurance, that would adequately cover the costs of their treatment. Insurance eligibility, scope of benefits, and reimbursement were the focus of the author. None of these are problems unique to managed care.

One of the patients cited was in a managed care program. Perhaps this instigated the editor's pejorative note, which, unlike the Commentary, focused on managed care rather than health insurance in general. Is there an insurance package in the United States . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
