Growing Neglect of American Children

In the 2 years that have elapsed since I prepared my article on the growing neglect of American children for the May 1991 issue of the AJDC,1 children have continued to bear the brunt of our nation's health care crisis. Unless there is a change in the current health insurance system for children, by the decade's end more than half of the children in America will not have health insurance through a parent's employer. The Medicaid program, which is supposed to provide medical care for the poor, will not be a big enough safety net to catch the growing number of children whose families cannot afford private health insurance.

As the number of children without health insurance soars, preventive health care is taking a back seat to costly crisis care. Uninsured children are 50% more likely to suffer health problems than children in families who have insurance, as uninsured . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
