Commentary on Progress of the Past 2 Years

Two years ago I wrote an article for AJDC that briefly reviewed two new initiatives that could have a major impact on adolescent health. These were the identification of national health objectives in Healthy People 2000: The National Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Objectives1 and the release of the recommendations of the US Preventive Services Task Force in the Guide to Clinical Preventive Services.2 These two efforts were viewed as important because they focused attention on prevention and on the special health issues of adolescents. Since the publication of the special issue of the AJDC, it has become clear that these two documents have contributed substantially to intensified efforts to improve the health and well-being of adolescents. After decades of identifying the critical health issues facing youth, solid national programs are taking shape that have the potential to fundamentally change how health care is provided to adolescents.
