In Reply.—We appreciate the kind words of Miele in supporting the importance of resident retreats. We continue to encourage the February retreat for the interns to be a social event only, as this short period away from the hospital seems to us most suitable for this purpose. It is imperative, nonetheless, that residency programs provide regularly scheduled opportunities for nonsocial discussions and creative interaction. In this regard, we schedule regular pizza and beer sessions for each of our three resident groups, to attend to the personal, professional, and programmatic issues, as Miele suggests. These sessions, plus regular house staff meetings, the PL2 retreat, monthly Residency Committee meetings, and other informal feedback sessions all form the structure to which Miele's concerns are addressed.
