The Society for Pediatric Research is a diverse group of scientists bonded by the common interest in research dealing with problems of children. Many of the society's members have very strong feelings regarding the social and political problems of health care for the poor and, in particular, health care for poor children. Nevertheless, it is not in the usual scope of our organization to comment as a group on these problems or even to claim particular expertise in this area. Indeed, other segments of the pediatric community have been asked to address these issues, and their efforts can be found in this issue.

As a research-oriented organization, the Society for Pediatric Research can make cogent comments and suggestions concerning the role of investigation in this problem area.
