Sir.—More than 20 000 people die in the United States each year as a result of alcohol-related motor vehicle accidents. Since children form their own habits and life-styles based on their parents' examples, it is prudent that parents set high standards regarding alcohol and limits on its consumption. One instance of setting poor examples occurs during the holiday season, when some parents, for their children to more actively participate in the festivities, give them nonalcoholic wine and beer while the parents imbibe the real thing. This behavior can give a child the impression from an early age that since Mom or Dad gave me a beverage like their own it must be acceptable. This can only increase a child's perception that alcohol consumption in our society is part of the norm.
