Pediatric Resident Career Day

Sir.—We would like to describe a program that has been developed at the University of Tennessee, Memphis College of Medicine, for our second-year residents (PL-2). The program is the Pediatric Resident Career Day, designed to provide information to PL-2 house officers to assist residents with career choices. The meeting was held at an appropriate site away from the hospital. If a resident was covering a service, appropriate substitution was arranged so the resident could attend the program. An educational grant from Ross Laboratories, Columbus, Ohio, helped provide valuable content input, as well as lunch and refreshments. The topics covered included the following: an overview of career choices and academic medicine given by the chair of pediatrics (who is also director of the pediatric residency program), military practice, public health practice, women's issues, group practice, managed care health maintenance organizations, and the academic/private practice route.
