Sir.—The outbreaks of Kawasaki syndrome (KS) in New York and Michigan reported by Rogers et al¹ coincided with a cluster of 13 cases in eastern Ontario and western Quebec.² Similarly, a case-control study³ was designed to test the possible association between KS and rug shampoo or other predisposing factors. Neighborhood children were used as controls with the only stipulation that they be within six months of the patients' ages.

Eleven cases were available for our study but only nine were matched with 27 controls. We failed to detect any association between KS and rugs in the home and shampoo exposure, or any other factor investigated, except perhaps maternal smoking. The mothers of eight of 11 children with KS smoked, compared with five of 27 mothers of the control group children.
