Sir.—Blank et al,1 are to be commended for their study on the role of red blood cell transfusions in previously ill neonates. They have confirmed what many of us have known through experience: the arbitrary use of transfusion for a myriad of "indications" without any data to support such therapy is often ineffective and full of potential complications.
Because the previous article by Stockman and Clark2 did support the use of transfusion of packed cells in select premature infants who have difficulty gaining weight (especially with hemoglobin values under 7.5 g/dL), it would be important to know the range and average hemoglobin values of groups A and B over the course of the Blank study.
