Sir.—Blank et al,¹ are to be commended for their study on the role of red blood cell transfusions in previously ill neonates. They have confirmed what many of us have known through experience: the arbitrary use of transfusion for a myriad of "indications" without any data to support such therapy is often ineffective and full of potential complications.

Because the previous article by Stockman and Clark² did support the use of transfusion of packed cells in select premature infants who have difficulty gaining weight (especially with hemoglobin values under 7.5 g/dL), it would be important to know the range and average hemoglobin values of groups A and B over the course of the Blank study. . . .
