In Reply.—Dr Stewart's letter affords me an opportunity to elaborate on his role in the pertussis controversy in England and on the validity and sensational quality of his opinions, as he has expressed them in print over the years. Although I have performed my own analysis, as I was composing this reply a definitive work authored by James Cherry, professor of pediatrics at UCLA, was received.1 For those who wish a detailed analysis and scientific rebuttal of Dr Stewart's role and claims, I encourage reference to this thoughtful work of Cherry's.
There is no question in my mind that Dr Stewart has been a major force in the outbreak of pertussis in England, as he correctly cites my inference to his role in his letter. Furthermore, he does ignore facts, he does overemphasize adverse effects of vaccine, he does minimize both the incidence and severity of whooping cough,
