It has been more than a quarter of a century since the first open heart procedures were carried out. Congenital Heart Disease After Surgery: Benefits, Residua and Sequelae presents a long-term look at survivors of operations for various forms of cardiac disease and reviews the late complications and problems. The book is appropriately dedicated to a founder of pediatric cardiology, Dr Helen Taussig. The prologue, and indeed many of the sections of the book, reflect an attitude of Dr Taussig's that as pediatricians we should be interested not merely in long-term survival but in improved quality of life, and that our attention as physicians should be directed to the proper care of the individual patient. This book contains papers written by authors from a number of major pediatric cardiac centers. Many of the papers have been published previously in the American Journal of Cardiology.
