The third edition of this textbook continues to show the high quality that has characterized previous editions. The editor has accomplished the formidable task of coordinating the work of 122 contributors and produced a book of uniformly good quality.

The initial section describes the different classes of microorganisms and discusses nosocomial infections, the immunopathology and manifestations of infectious diseases, and host-parasite interactions and their relationship to the pathogenesis of disease. Laboratory examinations and diagnostic methods are discussed in detail. Control of infectious diseases is discussed next and includes a summary of the newer antibiotics. The rest of the book is divided into 20 sections based on the primary organ system of involvement. The last section discusses presumed or possible infectious diseases. A notable addition to this section is the chapter on Kawasaki syndrome. The information on acquired immune deficiency syndrome probably did not come out during the gestation of this . . .
