'One at a Time'

With few exceptions, those of us who have written for this special issue and many who read these articles have had our lives, personally and professionally, influenced by C. Henry Kempe, the educator. We all were his students. I feel especially privileged since I am still his student and have been for some 20 years. Little needs to be said about his influence, throughout the years, on hundreds of residents, fellows, and junior faculty. He trained and educated us through modeling, lecturing, praising, and admonishing but mostly through giving us the responsibility to "do our thing."

There are few more experienced than I to testify to the feelings of fear and challenge on receiving a copy of a letter Henry had received, on the bottom of which was scribbled in thick, blue ink, "Ray, take care of this."
