The purpose of this book is to help parents gain a better understanding of behavior and development during the first 30 months of life. The material is based on data gathered by the Union College Character Research Project, Schenectady, NY. The book is 160 pages long and written for parents.

The strengths of this book are many. The authors are clearly enchanted by infants. The text captures the child's excitement and curiosity as he learns from exploring the environment. The authors frequently remind the reader that "the average child is a myth; no two children will develop at exactly the same rate." Each chapter begins with a section called Baby Talk: "If your baby could speak, this is what he might say about his needs in the coming months."
