This book is a worthy addition to the library of those who care for children with mental retardation. Like all books, it has its strengths and weaknesses, but its strengths significantly outweigh its weaknesses. Similar to other books by the authors, the text contains excellent references. Some of the information available here is not available in similar texts.
The following craniocerebral malformations are discussed: microcephaly, hydrocephaly, hydranencephaly, megalencephaly, craniostenosis, encephaloceles, holoprosencephaly, porencephaly, lissencephaly, nuclear aplasia, agenesis of the corpus callosum, malformations of the cerebellum, meningeal malformations, and brain tumors. The authors discuss in a separate section how the eye, ear, heart, skeleton, skin, and dermatoglyphics serve as "indicators of central nervous system malformations." There is a separate chapter listing the chromosomal syndromes that are associated with mental retardation. This is presented in a table form and, therefore, is not as complete as some of the other sections of the book.
