Sir.—It is well known that disseminated aspergillosis in immunocompromised patients is a fatal disease. In children affected by chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), therapy with amphotericin B alone is only marginally effective, and granulocyte transfusions or a surgical approach are often required.
Corrado et al1 suggested the combined use of rifampin and amphotericin B to treat a child with CGD and aspergillosis.
We report a new case of systemic infection caused by Aspergillus fumigatus in a boy suffering from CGD in whom successful treatment has been obtained with the combination of amphotericin B and rifampin.
Report of a Case.—A 14-year-old boy who had CGD2 was admitted to the Division of Infectious Diseases, University of Milan, Italy, because he was febrile (39.5 °C) and had right-sided pneumonia with pleural effusion and two fluctuant masses over the lateral aspect of the chest wall on the right side.
