Pediatric diagnostic ultrasonography has arrived. Technical refinements during the past decade have greatly improved the quality of ultrasonic images, and mushrooming availability of ultrasound units has provided most pediatricians with an awareness of the diagnostic potential of this method.

A profusion of publications reflects the current intense interest in diagnostic ultrasound. These include review articles on general and pediatric uses of ultrasound^1-5 and several textbooks and atlases specifically pediatric in scope.^6-9

What purpose can another review article serve at this time? With an array of diagnostic imaging options that includes roentgenography with and without contrast media, ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT), and nuclear scintigraphy, the radiologist can assist and advise the pediatrician in choosing the most appropriate examinations.
