Perineal Groove
Manifestations
A perineal groove is a sulcus lined with mucous membrane, extending from the posterior vaginal fourchette to the anterior border of an anus located anterior to its normal position. This uncommon anomaly probably results from a defect in embryogenesis of the inner genital fold. It is classified as Z-32 in the miscellaneous group in the Proposed International Classification of Anorectal Anomalies. Stephens and Smith1 have described three major features common to this group: normal formation of the vestibule, including urethra and vagina in its anterior two-thirds; hypertrophic minoral tails that skirt the perineum and course posteriorly to join the anus or surround it; and a wet groove in the perineum between the fourchette and anus.
