The purpose of this communication is to report another case with the combination of hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and Down syndrome. This will be the fifth case to be reported.^1-4

Report of a Case.—The patient was the fourth child of a 41-year-old woman. At birth, she showed the classical stigmata of Down syndrome, confirmed later at St Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center when chromosomal studies showed trisomy 21. At 3 years of age, her condition was diagnosed as diabetes mellitus, and she was given combined insulin zinc suspension and regular insulin. There was no family history of diabetes mellitus. No thyroid studies were done then. She was institutionalized at 13 years of age, whereupon she was noticed to have coarse, dry skin and to be lethargic and chronically constipated. Uptake of iodine 131 in 24 hours was 9%; protein-bound iodine was 1.0µg/100 ml; and thyroxine level was 3.6µg/100 ml . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
