During recent years, physicians in the western world have become increasingly aware of the importance of malnutrition in its various forms in the induction of physical and intellectual deficits, and have found that the nervous system of infants and young children is particularly vulnerable to this form of insult.

Clinical and experimental work in this field is scattered in journals of various disciplines, so that up to now it has not been easy to obtain a good overview of the literature. In particular, each of the disciplines germane to the study of the effects of malnutrition on the nervous system have pursued their own course with little interchange. It is for this reason that a book such as Nutrition and the Developing Nervous System, which sets out to synthesize and collate work in this field, is received with more than the usual interest.
