Indications for Surgical Intervention in Ulcerative Colitis in Children

THIS report is based upon the experience at the Graduate Hospital with the surgical treatment of 18 patients with ulcerative colitis in whom the disease had its onset in childhood or early adolescence. The review was undertaken in order to evaluate the indications for operation in these young patients. These 18 patients subjected to operation comprised approximately one third of the patients in this age group (16 or younger) who were treated for ulcerative colitis at the Graduate Hospital over a period of 20 years.
Clinical Material
Details concerning the patients, the extent of the colitis, the indications for surgery, and the operative findings are summarized in the Table. There were nine boys and nine girls. The ages of onset of colitis are shown in the following tabulation:
