Introduction
This review stems from a long-standing interest on the part of both authors in the subject of neonatal jaundice. Advances in many different fields with a bearing on this problem have been so rapid that it seemed desirable to bring them into focus at this time, not because a final synthesis is as yet possible but because the remaining gaps in our knowledge can now be outlined and to some extent filled in by what we hope is reasonable speculation. The review will therefore stress the unknown as much as the known facts, in the hope that such presentation may point the way to areas where research is still needed. It will not attempt, however, to cover the entire literature or present a neutral view throughout. Of necessity the ideas expressed have been shaped by the personal experience of the writers and are intended to stimulate discussion.
